Streetstyle: Best of Tune Magazine

Streetstyle is considered a recent phemenon and although it has definetly exploded in popularity in recent years, the documentation of style is nothing new. Film documentaries such as Wild Style and American Hardcore captured style through the the lens of subcultural movements and a host of newspapers and magazines have had street style features for decades.

VFILES has collected a small archive of streetsyle shots from the Japan-based Tune Magazine dating from 2005-2007. From these I have selected some of my favorites in this post. Images such as these act as a counter-balance to what has been filling up modern streetstyle blogs. These looks are not based around current trends or designer label whoring. It is clear through the images that these looks are a result of careful consideration and attention to the details. The lesson for me is that stylish individuals wear items in a way that imposes their style on the clothes not the other way around. You shouldn’t have to spend a ton of money to look great, you just have to know how you want to look. Let us know your thoughts on these looks in the comments section.

Undercoverism FW12 Honeyee Editorial

In this editorial for Honeyee, Jun Takahashi recruits his friends in the industry. Japanese fashion heavyweights including TK (Silly Thing), Takahiro Miyashita (the Soloist) and Shun Watanabe don garments from the Fall/Winter 2012 collection displaying their personal style through their selections. It seems that Jun Takahashi has really been pushing this idea of everyday people wearing Undercover since he modeled the Fall/Winter 2010 himself. This is something I believe the fashion industry needs to move towards . To me the style of ‘real people’ is so much more relatable than clothes on perfectly airbrushed models .

Undercover SS13 Men’s Collection

Undercover Spring/Summer 2013 Men’s Collection

We present the latest Undercover Spring/Summer 2013 collection; a follow up to Pyscho Color which is in stores now. Jun Takahashi continues themes from the Psycho Color and Open Strings collections combining elements of streetwear, dandyism and technical wear. Since the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Jun has continued experimenting with a varied color palette and this collection contains a bright array of oranges, greens, olives, and purples. The styling in this collection must be commended for mixing these colors effortlessly down to little details such as the buttons and socks. Some of the pieces seem like all too familiar riffs on men’s basics but there are definite standouts: the olive cape, the burgundy suit the all white looks, and the electric blue knit blazer. Look for more coverage on Third Looks as more images leak and the product begins to arrive in shops early next year.

Gyakusou FW12 Editorial via Hypebeast

Whether it’s in film or fashion I find myself drawn towards the visual juxtaposition of nature and technology. Since the start of the co-branded project, Gyakusou campaigns have used urban and natural backgrounds to romanticize running clothes. Hypebeast expands upon this idea with an in-house editorial showcasing the Fall/Winter 2012 collection. I welcome new takes … Read more

Coveted: Undercover Wool Rider Jacket from FW 2004/2005 ‘Arts & Crafts’

A few months ago I had read an article in Dwell picking apart the relative values of traditional art pieces and architecture. The author found it disturbing that a Frank Lloyd Wright could be had for a fraction of what a major Warhol piece may cost. This had me thinking about value disparities in the … Read more
