Whiz Limited SS14 Collection

I’ve posted Whiz Limited Collections on here before and it continues to be one of my favorite Japanese labels. I’ve yet to own any pieces by them but from what I can tell spring/summer 2014 is another strong outing. The styling here elevates the straight-forward product into something more interesting (that Varsity above should be an early contender for varsity jacket of the year). I  appreciate the color palette in this collection and how the different pieces are mixed and matched. Nothing is too bright or attention-seeking on it’s own but worn together there’s definitely a unique cohesive vision presented.  I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not but I definetly see a lot of visvim in this line.

Coveted: Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garcons S/S 2003 Parachute Jumper

It’s been a while since we’ve done a ‘Coveted’ feature here at Third Looks. Personally I’m always interested in seeing archival gear and standout pieces from collections by my favorite designers. While there’s those items that you obessess over with that become grails, there are also items that you never intended on buying which eventually become your favorites. Those are the ones you might find at a consignment shop like Tokio 7 in New York just browsing or something you spot through a browser search late night while suffering bouts of insomnia. I’m happy to post this rare Junya Watanabe women’s piece. I know he had some great pieces so I asked him to share how he came across this particular jumper and how his appreciation for it has grown since owning it.

This piece wasn’t really anything that I had been searching for, so in the traditional sense, it was not something I had ‘coveted’ for a while. One of my good friends actually sent me the link of the Rakuten listing, and when I had seen it, I knew I had to have it. I bought it about five minutes after seeing the listing for the first time. I think it was really love at first sight.

Upon receiving it, I was actually amazed at how heavy the package was. The fabric is heavy cotton, with heavy metal loop attachments and “backpack” straps. My favorite detail though is that the straps on the sleeves and the back are actually adjustable, you can pull the fabric up the length of the strap and fasten it with the buckle in order to producing an effect that is reminiscent to ruching. Despite this sweater being a women’s piece, it still is probably one of the most worn pieces in my wardrobe.

The Photography of Eric Bouvet

Browsing tumblr one day I came across one striking photo by Eric Bouvet. I did a quick search and found more images by the celebrated award-winning photojournalist. With the contrast stream of images I see daily, it’s not often that an image that really makes forces me to stop, stare and think. Looking through Bouvet’s work I saw a whole collection of candid fearless images that reflected the diversity of life on Earth.  I loved that flipping through his work brought me from the desert during Burning Man to the battlefields of Afghanistan and Chechnya to the rundown outskirts of Detroit. After the jump I have posted some of my absolute favorite photos by him.

HUMAN MADE SS14 Lookbook

2013 was a year of transition for Nigo. He formally left his role at BAPE after 20 years and began his job as creative director for UT (Uniqlo). Along the way he continued working on his own line HUMAN MADE which is a logical extension from A Bathing Ape. While the lookbook doesn’t show us much we haven’t seen before, HUMAN MADE is really all in the details. There’s an usual assortment of men’s casual staples including crew necks, beanies, and a varsity all modeled by Nigo himself. Human Made is expensive but being able to feel the garments in person at Haven, I do feel the brand has a certain intangible quality that isn’t found anywhere else. The menswear world has an obession with vintage and heritage but Nigo has always been that rare visionary who could bridge the gap between current pop culture and old manufacturing.

Nonnative Spring/Summer 2014 ‘Subcity Deweller’ Lookbook and Video

Japanese label Nonnative has been flying just under the radar for many years. The brands signature ARE well-made, easy to wear staples that subtly riff on the trends of the moment. Similar to brands like A.P.C or Acne, you can readily incorporate Nonnative stuff to a variety of wardrobes without too much fuss.  I thought the styling this collection was quite well done; really displaying how you can put together many different  types of looks from the spring/summer pieces.

In addition to the lookbook Nonnative put together this shaky VCR video which plays off of a group of young men who run across a bunch of roadside mannequins dressed in the season’s gear.

The Chesterfield Coat

Grind Magazine Vol.36

In colder weather, it’s hard to strike that balance between warmth, practicality and  unique style. A key piece for Fall and Winter dressing is a solid wool coat. The chesterfield coat fills this role particularly well. I’m partial to single breasted pieces in wool or camel but you can feel free to experiment with the different color options out there. While this coat is generally worn with more tailored  clothing, I really like to see it dressed down with either slim fitting trousers or skinny jeans and sneakers. You can experiment with both subtle minimalist sneakers and bulkier more attention grabbing models. For dressier occasions layer a button down underneath a knit and pair this it with a pair of oxfords or brogues.

Interview with Our Legacy by Sven Eselgroth

Photographer Sven Eselgroth contacted me to share an interview with menswear brand Our Legacy he had conducted while he was touring Scandinavia this past summer. Sven visited lead designer and brand co-founder Christopher Nying at their studios. In the interview Christopher touches base on the brands roots, inspirations and future, all accompanying photos in this feature are by Sven.

Can you describe your design education?

I studied art and fashion communication and I think that led to the clothing because I was working with clothes during this time. At first I studied very fine art – sculpture and painting. Then graphic design, fashion communication, illustration and some photography. I didn’t really want to do that, but at the same time we started Our Legacy and made graphic t-shirts, which suited me quite well because it was really conceptual. We didn’t set out to purposely make clothing, it was more about expression. We tried to understand what sub-culture a particular t-shirt came from and create a look with it. The prints were inspired by lots of different ideas such as punk, skate, football hooligans in the 80s… Today we are coming back to those inspirations again. It doesn’t need to be very specific sub-cultures but I think there are new ones growing today that we’re not even aware of yet which could be quite interesting. Time feels like it goes faster today, people are more aware of what is happening socially and politically due to the newsfeeds.
