Nigo is back with a cold weather collection for his Human Made brand. The label really focuses on vintage fabrications and nostalgic Americana. The pieces really have to be seen up close to be fully appreciated but they’re on display here on models who aren’t Nigo for once. Some key items include a burger themed souvenir, flannels and down items. Distribution for Human Made is still quite limited but END and IDOl are good bets.
Nigo once again models his own creations for the Human Made Fall/Winter 2015 Collection. The collection continues to act as a counter-point to A Bathing Ape. While both have vintage influences, Human Made’s production is much closer to 50’s and 60’s Americana than BAPE was. While alot of the details and the heft/quality of the garments don’t come through in photos all the time, it can be said that Human Made garments do give off a very unique feeling in person. Although the price point is high for the stuff, it’s sure to last as much as the original deadstock vintage garments that these garments mimic. Some key items in the collection include a couple leathers (an A-1 Bomber and a Perfecto-style rider’s jacket). Also the denim, t-shirts and a great down puffer round it out. Haven did their thing with their new editorial for the Spring/Summer collections entitled ‘Burn My Shadow’. They’ve been low-key building up one of the best brand lineups online and it’s good to see the Canadian team putting effort into presenting it in unique visual fashion. 2013 was a year of transition for Nigo. He formally left his role at BAPE after 20 years and began his job as creative director for UT (Uniqlo). Along the way he continued working on his own line HUMAN MADE which is a logical extension from A Bathing Ape. While the lookbook doesn’t show us much we haven’t seen before, HUMAN MADE is really all in the details. There’s an usual assortment of men’s casual staples including crew necks, beanies, and a varsity all modeled by Nigo himself. Human Made is expensive but being able to feel the garments in person at Haven, I do feel the brand has a certain intangible quality that isn’t found anywhere else. The menswear world has an obession with vintage and heritage but Nigo has always been that rare visionary who could bridge the gap between current pop culture and old manufacturing.
