Best Sneakers of 2014

2014 was a huge year for sneakers with countless memorable releases having come and gone. The sneaker industry is witnessing massive change and one can see the growing popularity of sneakers in the fashion community running parallel to the continued innovation within the sports/performance sector.

One of the key themes with sneaker design this year has been the development of more lifestyle releases that result from collaborations with varied parties from the streetwear and fashion worlds. In particular Adidas has continued to apply pressure to Nike through it’s established relationships with the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens , Kanye West and Pharrell. The later part of the year saw Nike continue to develop its SP (Special Projects) division with more limited and quickstrike releases that combine higher quality materials along with outside design influence from the likes of Errolson Hugh and Jun Takahashi.

As part of this commitment to the fashion industry, we see prices of certain more ‘luxe’ releases such as the Tisci x Nike Air Force 1 nearly reaching the pricepoint of high fashion designer sneakers. I think this is a good development in the long run as the sneaker giants are able to develop more innovative designs compared to largely apparel designers needing to figure out their own production and technology. It’ll be interesting to see if these trends perpetuate in the near year but in the meantime here is my personal list of the best sneaker releaes of 2014.

Adidas Tubular Release & Stockists

Anticipation for the release of the Adidas Tubular runner has steadily climbed and now that day is here (at for those of you in Europe). Hype first started building through blurry leaked photos of the sneaker allegedly linking the design to the forthcoming Kanye West ‘Yeezi’ collection. Rick Owens x Adidas Spring/Summer 2014

Adidas have been making headlines all this last quarter of the year with their signing of Kanye West, their collaboration with Raf Simons and the re-release of the Stan Smiths. Raf Simons x Adidas SS14 Sneakers

Adidas has been cranking out the designer collaborations with the Yohji Yamamoto Superstar, the Rick Owens collaboration and the current season Raf Simons joints. For Spring/Summer 2014 more Adidas are on the way and they’re just as crazy as the FW13 ones. Some would say they’re ugly, but if you saw the SS14 Paris runway show , Raf found  a way to make some of them work. Personally I can’t cosign many of these design but I do enjoy the boot and the Air Max 1/90 inspired sneakers. There’s something childish and pop-art about them, I have a feeling these will be something alot of Raf fans will regret sleeping on.

Y’s Yohji Yamamoto Adidas Superstar

In grade school all I wore were Adidas shelltoes. I had a bunch of pairs in different colors and the sneaker still holds a special place in my heart. Adidas Originals teamed up with Yohji Yamamoto for this special model of the Superstar, dubbed the Y’s Super Position. The hard shelltoe is gone replaced by a smooth leather toebox. The zig-zag seams feature loose thread that can be left to drag and fray or cut entirely.

Available in a black and white colorway you can find these August 10th at Y’s stores Tokyo, No. 6 London, No. 74 Berlin, No. 42 Paris, and select boutiques worldwide.

This editorial from the ‘1997’ issue of Fucking Young is inspired by rave and electronic music culture in the mid to late 90s. There are some great pieces featured with everything from Raf Simons , Highland, Adidas and Siki Im being used to paint a drug-induced portrait. Ian Bradley definetly killed it with the styling on this one, check out his Style Profile if you haven’t already.
