Undercover SS13 Non-No Editorial

We covered the Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook earlier this year, but this Men’s Non-No editorial really nails the feeling of the collection  .Set against a psychedelic forest back-drop , the looks here really capture the eclectic  mix of slouchy tailored pieces, streetwear and mountaineering inspired outerwear;  all laced with that familar Jun Takahashi punk edge. Photos of ‘Jean-Michel Basquiat’ at the Gagosian Gallery

The prestigious Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea is exhibiting “Jean-Michel Basquiat”, a collection of 59 works by the iconic artist. If you are at all interested in Basquiat’s work, I highly recommend you go see this show for yourself. On hand are a comphrensive collection of Basquiat’s paintings that range from his early works (including one that was painted on a fence) to his late life. I read a review of the show on New York Times and I thought art critic Ken Johnson nicely articulated the lasting appeal of Basquiat’s work.

“For all its bristling fury Basquiat’s art remains engaging and likable. It is not overbearing, withholding or offensive but visually generous, materially sumptuous and entertaining. There is an eager-to-please vulnerability that gives it a bittersweet emotional complexity.”

Whether or not you are able to go to the gallery, I would cite the 2011 film documentary “The Radiant Child” as required viewing for anyone with an interest in Jean-Michel’s life and art.

The show continues through April 6 at the Gagosian Gallery, 555 West 24th Street, Chelsea.

NEPENTHES SS13 “Pattern Chasing” Lookbook

NEPENTHES kills it with this Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook. The Japanese-based consortium incorporates their (Engineered Garments, Needles, and Sonic Labs et al) into this inspired take on Spring. Pattern heavy and brightly colored , the styling displayed here is some of the best I’ve seen thus far this year. Bright greens, blues, and stripes are paired with floral, Hawaiian,  camo and  paisley prints. It’s nice when a lookbook inspires you to re-invent your wardrobe to match the changing seasons. If you want to ‘pattern chase’ the items found here, keep an eye out for drops at the New York and Japan Nepenthes locations.

Style Profile: Rachel

I’d like to share the story of how I met Rachel. It was actually on the street months ago when I asked to take this streetstyle pic of her. Turns out that photo was a good indicator of her personal style and how she expresses herself through her clothing. Rachel takes alot of vintage pieces and basics and works them into an outfits that are greater than the sum of their parts. Photographing this style profile was a good reminder for me that it’s not just the individual pieces you wear but how you coordinate them that makes the difference.

How has living in New York influenced your style?

New York City has given me the balls to dress genuinely. When I was a kid, I would prance around my parent’s house in get-ups I’d never dream of wearing in public. But this city is incredibly magical and filled with such brilliant, passionate people and being here makes me feel brave, in style and in life.

How did you build up your current wardrobe to where it is?

I have to say, I don’t particularly enjoy shopping. It takes forever and trying on clothes is exhausting. I prefer to take long strolls through the city, maybe do some gallery hopping and then let pieces come to me. If I don’t set out to shop, I end up browsing anyway and find great things.

You mix in alot of vintage items , what makes a vintage item worth picking up for you?

If it makes my heart race, I’ll buy it.

You told me you about your love of hats, how did that develop?

Growing up, I stalked Bill Cunningham’s photos and lived vicariously through them. Over time, I noticed how beautiful women looked when they were wearing hats and I wanted to be like them. Now, it’s part of me. If an ensemble were a cake, the hat would be the cherry. And for some reason, baseball caps make me feel extraordinarily sexy, so I like that.

visvim SS13 “Dissertation on Symbolism and Our Prayer Flag” Lookbook

visvim presents this lookbook for it’s spring/summer 2013 collection ‘ Dissertation on Symbolism and Our Prayer Flag’. The looks within show the continued evolution of the signature visvim styling. The expected staples make a return but this lookbook is punctuated by the use of voluminous blankets and scarves. Japanese noragi style tops return in a variety of materials , adding some flavor to the more straightforward Americana interpretations that Hiroki has been doing.  Also of note is the new visvim webshop which can be accessed HERE.

Supreme x COMME des GARCONS SHIRT 2013 Capsule Collection Lookbook

Photography by Ari Marcopoulos

SENSE Magazine brings this first look at the 2013 Supreme x COMME des GARCONS SHIRT collaboration which is modeled by skate legend Jason Dill and New York downtown queen Chloe Sevigny. The familiar assortment of hats, hoodies, t-shirts, and button-downs are all here. The polka dot print from the first collaboration also returns, but this time it’s super-imposed on a blow up digi-camo print. While camo is quickly being played out through poorly executed pieces , I do enjoy it’s usage in this line . The looks are rounded out by a coach’s jacket and sneakers by Vans. Expect the collection to sell out near instantly on release. Let us know what you think in the comments.
