Wing Shya for iD Magazine Retrospective

Fashion editorial rarely transcends into emotional and thought-provoking territory but the work of Wing Shya for iD Magazine proves that this is certainly possible. Wing Shya‘s photographic style draws me in because it captures a certain dystopian romanticism. I think his photos express loniness and alienation in modern urban life in a way that almost looks photojournalistic. … Read more

The Soloist SS13 Collection Showroom Visit

We posted up the The Soloist Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook we earlier today, now comes the showroom pics that reveal some of the shirting, outerwear, and accessories from the collection. The collection is inspired by the style of actor John Cassavetes in his various roles. The outerwear in this collection is a bit more understated and less ornate than past soloist seasons. Miyashita puts his spin on trench coats, MA-1s, and even tartan gingham-check shirts for this spring range.

In the accesories department, once again The Soloist collaborates once again with Oliver Peoples on an eyewear range. As well there is a large line of jewelery including collaborations with jeweler Cody Sanderson. There are also several shoes in the line that are made in conjunction with AUTHENTIC SHOE & CO as well. Expect items to begin arriving in stores in late January 2013.

The Soloist by Takahiro Miyashita SS13 – Symphony # 0007

Takahiro Miyashita presents his Spring/Summer 2013 collection for The Soloist, Symphony # 0007, with a lookbook comprised of subdued black&white film photography. The clothes themselves harken back to some of Takahiro’s earlier work with Number (N)ine.

The range reintrepts classic men’s staples such as gingham check shirts, trench coats, and parkas. The design is meant to marry functionality and design and the formal with casual. We’ll be focusing on specific items from the collection in an upcoming post.

Streetstyle: Best of Tune Magazine

Streetstyle is considered a recent phemenon and although it has definetly exploded in popularity in recent years, the documentation of style is nothing new. Film documentaries such as Wild Style and American Hardcore captured style through the the lens of subcultural movements and a host of newspapers and magazines have had street style features for decades.

VFILES has collected a small archive of streetsyle shots from the Japan-based Tune Magazine dating from 2005-2007. From these I have selected some of my favorites in this post. Images such as these act as a counter-balance to what has been filling up modern streetstyle blogs. These looks are not based around current trends or designer label whoring. It is clear through the images that these looks are a result of careful consideration and attention to the details. The lesson for me is that stylish individuals wear items in a way that imposes their style on the clothes not the other way around. You shouldn’t have to spend a ton of money to look great, you just have to know how you want to look. Let us know your thoughts on these looks in the comments section.

Editorial: Man About Town Issue #10 – On the Prowl

Man about Town Issue #10: The Dog Issue
Editorial: On the Prowl
Photography: Paolo Roversi
Styling: Katy England
Model: Simon Sabbath

Man about Town is one of my favorite men’s magazines. It comes out only bi-annually and can be a bit difficult to track down but every issue I’ve come across is worth owning. There’s not not filler or advertisements and they always have great concepts and visually stunning editorials. The magazine is one of the few that gets it absolutely RIGHT; pairing a worldwide outlook with great product and travel recommendations and conversations with some of the most relevant figures in popular culture and creative industries. This editorial is from the latest issue #10:  The Dog Issue which explores man’s relationship with our canine friends.

Style Profile: Charly

Our sense of style is rarely stagnant; I love that as we evolve and change as people, our wardrobes quickly follow. Since I’ve met Charly he has added many pieces that compliment his lifestyle and changing physique. While fashion is often focused on the concept of an “ideal” physique it is more inspiring for me to see people who are comfortable in their clothes. Rick Owens once said “Working out is modern couture”. Perhaps the larger lesson from that statement is that clothes shouldn’t dictate your lifestyle, your lifestyle should dictate the clothes you choose.  Some of you may be familar with Charly from his role as community manager with TOJ (purveyors of fine leather jackets)  but this feature should provide you plenty more insight into his personal style.

When did you begin caring about clothes and how has your style evolved since then?

The first time I began caring about clothes was in middle school when I got my first pair of Jordans and then Timberlands during my high school year in Philadelphia.  This evolved into brands like Akademiks and Enyce paired with a throwback and a pair of AF1’s on my feet. Then in college, I got my first glimpse into some quality clothing by being introduced to Japanese raw denim. Since then, my style has just been whatever I feel comfortable in and silhouette that I want to achieve.

Explain how you first got into weight lifting and how it has impacted the way you shop for clothes.

Coming into my junior year of high school, I was 5’11” and whopping 120-125 pounds of skin and bones. I didn’t like the way I looked and wanted to change my physique, so like most boys my age, I started to do a bit of lifting – nothing serious. Then as I got into college, my lifting intensified. By then it was part of my lifestyle instead of a chore, but I still had no clear path for the lifting. It did affect the way I shopped for clothing because my arms, legs, and butt would not fit into some of the skinnier pieces I wanted to wear. However, I kept that in mind and made sure I stayed a certain weight (170-175) so I could still fit into a lot of the clothing I liked. About 2 years ago, I got hooked onto powerlifting and that’s when my outlook on training and clothing changed. I realized that powerlifting made me happier than any piece of clothing would. Since then my training has took priority to fitting into clothing.
