Style Profile: Paul

My style has been under constant evolution since I first got interested in fashion almost a decade ago. It has been a challenge working in pieces from so many different brands into my wardrobe and I always appreciate others who can dress across brands and flip it their own way. Paul is a fashion student at F.I.T and he is someone who definitely owns amazing pieces but the way he wears them is all his own. For men especially I think it is key to look and feel comfortable in the clothes you own. When it comes to the Style Profiles on Third Looks, I select people who dress according to their own vision. I hope that this site helps people find their own style and empowers them to make informed fashion decisions.

How’d you first get interested in fashion and how has your style evolved over time?

I liked clothes from an early age. I even went through my older sister copies of Vogue when I was younger. Then I got into skateboarding, wearing tapered baggy cords with Sal 23 or fatigue cargo pants and some Vans Old Skools. I would go through a copy of Transworld and see all those cool printed t-shirts and I was really into that, especially Hook-Ups. In early 2000 I came across Graniph T-shirts, which was a Japanese design company. I was looking into that and found an online forum called Superfuture and at the same time I was working for a high end retail store in NYC. These combined factors opened more doors to what’s out there. As I got older I transitioned to a more fitted and minimal style (slim wool trousers and dressy shoes). Despite that I always seem to go back to buying sneakers. My style changes now and then but I always reflect on my old style and mix it with my current style.

How has your education as a designer changed your outlook on clothes and shopping?

Fashion education made me more critical. I have an idea of how clothes are sewn together so when I see something made poorly, that just raises a red flag. Sometimes it is the complete opposite, I would see something so interesting and well made that I have to figure out how it was made. It can really help you realize some people are creative geniuses.

Coveted: TOJ1 Varsity Jacket

Above TOJ1 Varsity Jacket in the “Jason Bourne” Colorway

Varsity jackets, aka letterman jackets, are a classic wardrobe staple that underwent a strong resurgence in 2008. While traditionally worn by students to represent one’s school and/or team, it is not uncommon to to see various interpretations being offered by labels such as Visvim, Balenciaga, Junya Watanabe, Number (N)ine, and A.P.C. to name a few. Up until this point, the only letterman jackets available for purchase to consumers were either vintage or commissioned to be produced in bulk (Skookum aka Centralia Knitting Mills being one such company); either route usually resulted in a boxy fitting piece with awkward proportions and standard materials. This particular piece resulted from an individual’s effort to fulfill a demand among superfuture members for a high-quality letterman jacket that was also slim fitting and reasonably priced. Although initially started for a small group of members, it quickly caught on and to this day is still one of his most demanded pieces.

The Maison Martin Margiela Reference Guide

Believe it or not we have reached our 200th post here at Third Looks. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has contributed, supported or simply enjoyed this blog since it’s humble beginnings over a year ago. I couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate this milestone than presenting this comprehensive Maison Martin Margiela Reference Guide. Please enjoy this hefty reference guide on all things Maison Martin Margiela.

The Maison Martin Margiela Reference Guide

Information about Martin Margiela, and Maison Martin Margiela, is everywhere, but a proper reference does not exist.  With respect to Martin Margiela’s clear wishes to remain anonymous, and his continued silence after his retirement, I have omitted most personal information about him.  This is a long read meant as a reference, not an article.  If you are coming in totally blind, feel free to read the following short articles to get oriented:

Background – A summary from a Margiela expert.
Background – Vogue UK, a brief timeline.
Culture/Marketing – Cult of Invisibility Part 1 and Part 2.

Wing Shya for iD Magazine Retrospective

Fashion editorial rarely transcends into emotional and thought-provoking territory but the work of Wing Shya for iD Magazine proves that this is certainly possible. Wing Shya‘s photographic style draws me in because it captures a certain dystopian romanticism. I think his photos express loniness and alienation in modern urban life in a way that almost looks photojournalistic. … Read more

The Soloist SS13 Collection Showroom Visit

We posted up the The Soloist Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook we earlier today, now comes the showroom pics that reveal some of the shirting, outerwear, and accessories from the collection. The collection is inspired by the style of actor John Cassavetes in his various roles. The outerwear in this collection is a bit more understated and less ornate than past soloist seasons. Miyashita puts his spin on trench coats, MA-1s, and even tartan gingham-check shirts for this spring range.

In the accesories department, once again The Soloist collaborates once again with Oliver Peoples on an eyewear range. As well there is a large line of jewelery including collaborations with jeweler Cody Sanderson. There are also several shoes in the line that are made in conjunction with AUTHENTIC SHOE & CO as well. Expect items to begin arriving in stores in late January 2013.

The Soloist by Takahiro Miyashita SS13 – Symphony # 0007

Takahiro Miyashita presents his Spring/Summer 2013 collection for The Soloist, Symphony # 0007, with a lookbook comprised of subdued black&white film photography. The clothes themselves harken back to some of Takahiro’s earlier work with Number (N)ine.

The range reintrepts classic men’s staples such as gingham check shirts, trench coats, and parkas. The design is meant to marry functionality and design and the formal with casual. We’ll be focusing on specific items from the collection in an upcoming post.
