Style Profile: Taylor Okata

One of the things that came up when I interviewed Tay for this style profile is how important comfort and attitude is to personal style. Tay owns some awesome designer pieces but what makes his style unique is how he confidently mixes pieces in an unconventional manner and makes them his own . Tay’s personal style was a result of his upbringing  in Hawaii/LA and also his time spent living in Tokyo.

You may have seen Tay on many a streetstyle blog before in the past and after meeting him I can see why; Tay isn’t afraid to experiment and try new things with his style.  I’m happy to share with you some of his favorite summer looks and also his unique perspectives on style as an individual who’s worked in a variety of roles in the New York fashion industry.

marka FW13 Lookbook

Marka is a spin-off diffusion line to Japanese label Markaware designed by Shunsuke Ishikawa with a pricepoint that is more than reasonable given the quality. The designs are a little bit more youthful and casual compared to it’s slightly more dressed up brethren. The collection is full of patterns and textures styled smartly. This is one of those lookbooks where the quality of the actual garments is well represented. While I haven’t had the chance to see these garments in person, everything here looks like it’s well worth the price of admission. Japanese customers can find the brand online at the Area webshop or visit the official marka site HERE.

Baohaus 2013 Yearbook

Baohaus Summer 2013

I  remember the first time I ate at Baohaus. I was with a couple friends near the OG Rivington Street  location and we were all starving.  We ordered a variety of baos between us and enjoyed them as Tribe Called Quest played through the speakers and a tightly contested NCAA Basketball game flashed on the TV. At that point I didn’t know much about the restaurant or the staff working there.

Fast forward a couple of years  and  Baohaus  is now in their current spot at 238 E. 14th Street. I’ve become friends with the owners Evan and Eddie Huang. Baohaus goes beyond just being an establishment that serves delicious Taiwanese food; it’s special because it’s a natural meeting place for friends to gather. It’s the type of place that you catch up with the homies at over hot food and a solid rap soundtrack. I snapped some photos of the staff at Baohaus and asked them to share some of their favorite work experiences as well as their preferences in music, baos and sneakers. Get to know some of the faces at Baohaus that make it one of the most fun places to eat in Manhattan. Click through for the feature.

Y’s Yohji Yamamoto Adidas Superstar

In grade school all I wore were Adidas shelltoes. I had a bunch of pairs in different colors and the sneaker still holds a special place in my heart. Adidas Originals teamed up with Yohji Yamamoto for this special model of the Superstar, dubbed the Y’s Super Position. The hard shelltoe is gone replaced by a smooth leather toebox. The zig-zag seams feature loose thread that can be left to drag and fray or cut entirely.

Available in a black and white colorway you can find these August 10th at Y’s stores Tokyo, No. 6 London, No. 74 Berlin, No. 42 Paris, and select boutiques worldwide.

Raf Simons x Fred Perry AW13 collection

While the on-going collaboration between Fred Perry and Raf Simons has not really broke new ground in it’s product offering, there are always a few gems in each collection. For Autumn/Winter 2013, Raf once again visits Mod culture (think checkerboard shirts) and mashes it against American collegiate wear (varsity jackets w/ chenille letters). The presentation is nicely done with Pierre Debusscherre behind the lens with styling by Robbie Spencer (fashion director at Dazed & Confused). Keeping with the line’s inspirations the location of this shoots Hippodrome de Boitsfort ( a former racecourse in Brussels built in 1875).

My personal favorites are the electric blue duffle coat, the knit polo and the burgundy varsity. Take a look at the rest of the collection after the jump.

11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi AW13

Spanish based Boris Bidjan Saberi is known for his raw industrial aesthetic. Often BBS garments undergo many unconventional treatments (he’s experiment with  tar, transparent leather and even pig-blood-dyes for example) which set his pieces apart from most men’s brands. The ’11’ line is a more affordable, street-ready version of his trademark vision. The pieces are a standard mix of graphic t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories which come in at a much lower price-point than his mainline and made from hard-wearing durable materials like heavy denim and thick canvas.

Oki-Ni just posted a selection of the goods including a range of phone cases, duffles and backpacks that resulted from a collaboration with German technical fabric specialist Ortlieb. Those guys value utilitarianism in design will want to check out this accessories range in particular. The duffle is made with thick PVC and canvas that is both waterproof and durable. The mountain backpack  features two internal pockets  and has a padded back-piece and shoulder straps, for a comfortable and well ventilated fit .The ‘Safe It’ iPhone holder also crafted from waterproof PVC has one clear side, allowing the wearer to view their phone’s screen. The holder has a rolled Velcro closure and an adjustable lanyard  that can be worn around the neck.
