Nike Gyakusou SS14 Collection

The ongoing collaboration between Undercover designer Jun Takahashi and Nike continues under the Gykausou running sub-line. Previous seasons have shown a transition towards incorporation more technically advanced textiles and this continues in the Spring/Summer collection with the inclusion of Nike Sweat Map  ventilation. The sweat map tech uses an engineered jacquard weave with pinpoint laser perforations in order to keep the hottest areas of the body cool under pressure and rigorous exercise.

A key design theme this season is the idea of duality (ying-yang). This is expressed throughout the line through contrasting colors and materials split vertically across garments and footwear. To Jun (and many athletes) Takahashi running is a battle between two opposite emotions. It’s a struggle between joy and agony, elation and exhaustion, persistence and surrender. It is a crusade waged by both the body and the mind and that constant struggle definitely shows graphically in this collection.

The usual mix of jackets dri-fit tops, and running shorts/pant is back but this time they are accompanied by a new sneaker model Nike Lunar Speed AXL. While I do like aspects of the collection, I was a little disappointed when I first saw the collection. It seems like the more elaborate lookbooks of past seasons have been replaced by the more stock photography found here, and the designs themselves don’t stand out as much from the rest of the pack as they used to. Perhaps as the line grows, Jun’s direct involvement is being reduced and the line has adapted to serve more of a core running audience than the more fashion-oriented crossover audience that it had in the past.

The Nike x Undercover Gyakusou Spring 2014 Collection launches globally on March, 1.

Style Profile: Lucas Tyson

The best part about the process of posting these style profiles is getting insight into someones style and getting to know them better as a person through that . I’ve known Lucas for some time now as a friend and it was cool to interview him for the site and hear more about how his style developed.

I hear a lot of my taller friends complain that it’s hard for them to find clothes that fit. At 6’7″ Lucas definitely stands out in a crowd but I admire how he was able to mix pieces from a variety of brands to create a personal aesthetic that represents his personality and interests well. I sat down with the homie to discuss where his style has been and where its going.

When did your interest in clothes start? What kind of stuff were you wearing back then?

I have always had an appreciation for clothes, but the turning point for me was the first time I went to the old Recon store on Eldritch Street. I was finally making enough  money to get some decent clothes. I stumbled across the store when the first Stash AF1 was releasing, and I was blown away by the product. The store manager was kind enough to educate me about the brand and the NY streetwear scene in general. This lead to finding out about Retail Mafia brands that were prevalent in the scene at the time. In particular I wore SSUR, Supreme and Alife tees and hoodies, Evisu jeans, Northface jackets, and Nikes.

Nike ID Air Max 90’s

For one reason or another I’ve never tried customizing my own pair of Nike IDs until now. I was always a bit put off by the wait time and I suppose I was waiting to get inspired.  A few weeks ago I really wanted another pair of Air Max 90’s so I pulled the trigger on this design. The design is inspired by the Air Max 90 Infrareds. My goal is to make the whole shot lighter and more minimal feeling.

I basically took the parts on the shoe which were originally black and switched them out for white. The color on the IDs doesn’t exactly match that of the infrareds and I wasn’t able to keep the red on the actual soles. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the way these came out and excited to wear them constantly. The quality on the IDs are passible but I was a little disappointed with some of the stitching (particularly around the plastic part that reads Air Max). Definitely enjoyed the actual process of bringing the sneaker from concept to reality and I really hope that they put Air Max 95’s back on the Nike ID website.

Nike Gyakusou FW13 Release

Oki-Ni just dropped a big selection of fall/winter Nike Gyakusou items. As always there’s the regular assortment of thermals, jackets and running tights. Pro-tip for the less athletically inclined: Gyakusou also makes for incredible lounge/bodega wear.  See my favorite pieces from the release below. Find the collection on Oki-Ni HERE.

Nike Air Pegasus 83/30 “Mineral Teal”

Nike has been playing around with the Air Pegasus quite a bit a year, as 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the runner. The 83/30 version of the sneaker uses more modern materials (see the PRM tape on the seams) and slightly updates the shape of the sneaker. There’s been a few dope colorways of the 83/30 already this year, but this may be the best yet. The shoe has already dropped (and sold out) at select retailers but you can find it on pre-order at Titolo. More photos after the jump.

Nike GYAKUSOU Holiday 2013 Lookbook

GYAKUSOU  is back for the colder months. Once again Jun Takahashi speared the design on this technical line for runners. To accompany the product shots , there are also these more stylized lookbook images featuring the clothes in action in a forest setting. The Holiday line seems to emphasize performance and technical features.  The centerpiece of it is the Nike Aeroloft Vest is a lightweight layering piece that can be worn to maintain warmth overtop the Dri-Fit thermals, longsleeve and shortsleeve tops.

The collection also features these accesories: a Knit Cap, Thermal Running Gloves, and Dri-FIT Neck Warmer. Also on deck are 6 colorways of runners.  Once again Jun chooses the Nike LunarGlide+ 5 and the Nike Lunarspider LT+ 3 but this time the colorsways are tonal in nature.

The LunarGlide+ 5 in tonal red and brown colorways come in men’s sizes while the women get the same brown colorway as well as a light grey colorway. The Lunarspider LT+ 3 will be offered in a  blue colorway similar to last seasons offering and a light grey colorway. The 2013 holiday collection is set to launch at select stockists this October.

Nike Mayfly Woven QS

If you’re in the search for a warm-weather sneaker these Nike May Woven QS may fit the bill. This model first appeared last summer and quickly vanished off of store shelves. Finally Nike has brought it back with two new colorsways on-top of the original grey and navy colors. Look for these to launch in shops Saturday July 27th.
