Interview with Brett and Guy of Viberg Boot

Today I’m proud to bring you an interview I did with Brett Viberg and Guy Ferguson, two of the people steering the ship at Viberg Boot. Viberg is a Canadian owned and operated family business, based in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1931  founder Ed Viberg set out to craft the highest quality boots he could. That dedication to product is still at the heart of everything Viberg does. While the boots were originally targeted to workers in the logging industry, the brand has been in successful in reaching a more fashion conscious market partially due to collaborations with Inventory Magazine, Flathead and most recently Nigel Cabourn.  I spoke with Brett and Guy about some of latest developments at Viberg and the challenges of expanding the audience of a storied Canadian brand.

Interview with Eugene Kan Managing Editor of Hypebeast

In less than a decade Hypebeast has grown from a simple blog into a media empire in it’s own right. Site founder Kevin Ma began the site in 2005 and since then it’s  become a definitive online destination for anyone interested in men’s fashion. In the past year Hypebeast launched both an online store AND a print publication Hypebeast Magazine.

I had the opportunity to pick the brain of Eugene Kan, who is the Managing Editor at Hypebeast. Eugene has been at the center of Hypebeast’s evolution into these new ventures and in this interview he shares some of the why’s and how’s behind the expansion.  We also touch on other topics including the proliferation of streetwear online, his favorite retail shops worldwide and how the men’s fashion market is changing throughout Asia.

Sophnet FW13/14 Lookbook

Recent years have shown steady growth for Japan based label Sophnet. The brand has crept into more stores on both North American and European shores, surely part of the plan for Jun Co (who owns Sophnet, Uniform Experiment and F.C.R.B.).

The good news is that the Fall/Winter 2013/14 season is one of the strongest I’ve seen. Heavy on collaborations, the season features pieces designed in unison with Rocky Mountain Featherbed, Danner, Tricker’s, Spectus, Lee, FSF, Canada Goose and New Era. Stylistically the collection has a rugged modern vibe. The pieces look utilitarian without ever seeming too overwrought or overdesigned. Personal favorites for me are the vests, down jackets, and flannels but the whole thing is looking incredibly strong. While cooler weather may be months away, it might be wise to start saving for some investment pieces that you’ll get plenty of wear out of once fall hits.

If you’re in the search for a warm-weather sneaker these Nike May Woven QS may fit the bill. This model first appeared last summer and quickly vanished off of store shelves. Finally Nike has brought it back with two new colorsways on-top of the original grey and navy colors. Look for these to launch in shops Saturday July 27th.

Neighborhood FW13 Lookbook

Neighborhood doesn’t deviate far from its brand DNA for it’s fall/winter 2013 collection. In recent years the brand has shed some of it’s youth-driven streetwear image and has perused a more refined aesthetic rooted in workwear, motorcycle culture and Americana. Head designer Shinsuke Takizawa always has a great eye for creating memorable lookbooks and this definitely ranks up there as one of my favorites from the Japanese label. The photography is done in a style that references periods from the 1940s to the 1970s. You’ll be sure to find some incredible pieces amongst the selection of Shearling Jackets, Chore coats and denim.
