Style Inspiration: Neighborhood Editorials

Most of the time I much prefer looking at clothing through editorials rather than lookbooks. Over the years I’ve saved quite a few images from various sources that feature pieces by NEIGHBORHOOD.  The brand has such a strong point of view and I appreciated the way stylists and photographers were able to flip it’s brand image any manner of ways. To find inspiration for my personal style I like to look back at both old editorials of brands I like just to see the evolution of the brand. The range of editorials after the jump range from moody and militaristic to more casual everyday style.

Journal Standard FW13 Lookbook

Journal Standard’s M.O is to put out well made casual wear classics. Their  Fall/Winter lookbook has that in spades. If you are looking to get your grown man on at your day office job, you could definitely do worse than Journal Standard.

The pieces I like the most are the varsity jacket above, the black quilted jacket and the coat in the last look. Visit the brand’s official website for more info.

LN-CC Levi’s Red Archive

First introduced in 1999, Levi’s RED is a concept collection by Levi’s that is dedicated to reinventing the iconic Levi’s 5-pocket jean and proposing new forms and aesthetics for jeanswear.

LN-CC will be the exclusive worldwide stockist for the first Levi’s RED collection to be released in seven years and to commemorate they have curated a small archive of the first Levi’s RED collection from ’99 ‘Twisted RED.’ The most striking aspect of the collection is how the brand played around with the  fit and proportion of the denim, while maintaing the ‘heritage’ look.

The 2014 ‘Lined RED’ collection draws its inspiration from Levi’s long history of lining many of the denim styles with cleanly nished blanket fabrics or sheep’s wool as early as 1879 and each piece will n, each denim garment is fully lined with indigo-coloured cotton silk. You can shop the archive collection HERE and see more looks after the jump.

Silent Whisper Product Review

I was first started tracking Silent Whisper several months back and you may remember the initial post I made about the brand. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of using several items from the line. I gave all three items I received thorough use and I have to say I like them better now than when I first received them (which is the opposite of what usually happens). The above photo is how the package came as you can see there’s some serious attention to detail paid here. The T-shirt came inside plastic bag and the whole package was stored inside either the dust bag or branded cardboard box. It felt great opening up the mail that day and seeing what was there from the handwritten labels to how carefully each item had been packed. I have to admit that my accessories game is kind of weak and I’ve been looking for a reliable and affordable leather goods brand that I can turn to time and again. I’m happy to report that I may have found it in Silent Whisper. In this review I tackle the following items:

  •  Position Locator – Bi-fold Wallet Model: AF-W01-005
  • The Interwiner – Long Slim Belt Model: AF-BT01-001
  • Eyes & Sins Prologue – Roses of War Model: GT-01-001

Style Profile: Nina Hahn ‘Tokyo Satellite’

Style Profiles have been an essential part of this blog since the inception of Third Looks. I wanted to share the personal style of people I’m inspired by and do so in a way that would capture not only their look but the thought process behind their style. The way Nina dresses is unorthodox and utterly original. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in the same outfit twice and she constantly evolves: changing her hair, accessories and adding new pieces to her wardrobe. Her appearance is striking but not over the top or attention seeking. It’s this balance between the subtle and the gaudy that really sets her apart. Her attention to detail makes her one of the most stylish people I’ve met in New York. Nina has started being a stylist on shoots and it’s clear to tell from the way she dresses herself that she a creative vision.

Rebekah Seok who took these photos (and absolutely killed the shoot I might add) wanted to title the feature ‘Tokyo Satellite’ and I think in a way that’s a fitting descriptor for Nina’s style. Her style is a confluence of her time spent in Tokyo, London, New York and other far flung destinations (both real and imagined).  Her inspirations formed through these appearances and beamed to her through things like music, books and films. I had a pretty in-depth conversation with Nina about the evolution of her wardrobe and the core things which have shaped her aeshetic identity.

Many people would look at what you wear and think that they wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Are there styles you don’t feel you could pull off?

There are some things that body type wise I can’t pull off because of certain silhouettes. Like if I wanted to wear a V-cut dress that went down to my stomach I wouldn’t wear it because it just doesn’t work with my body type or it would give off an image that I wouldn’t want to give off.

How conscious are you about giving about the image that you are giving off with how you dress?

I think the only thing is I don’t like to give off a very sexual vibe. I don’t want to wear to wear anything that I know is showing off a lot of skin and asking people to look me up and down. I don’t like to dress like that. I like mini-skirts and tight clothes but I would definitely dress it down with something that’s the complete opposite so it’s not too much.

What are some of the things that inspire your style?

Children’s books, books in general. animation and a lot of art too. Not necessarily a illustration of a man or a woman, just the piece of art on it’s own. Even music, I like classical music and punk music a lot. I would kind of interpret a song or music in my own way and incorporate that into how I wear clothing.

Neighborhood FW13 Releases

Neighborhood is a brand which has evolved with it’s audience. In recent years the Japanese label has moved away from it’s streetwear leanings and into developing more refined product.  I was browsing the Neighborhood webshop earlier tonight and saw that there were plenty of jackets, knits, shirts and accessories that I would love to own  . I thought I’d share some of my picks with you, be sure to check that amazing Buffalo knit which is a collabo with Kaneda.
