NikeLab Zoom Fly Special Edition

Nike has been innovating bringing out a ton of new models and collabs this year. This time the experimental NikeLab branch release the Zoom Fly Special Edition which is a homage to runner Eliud Kipchoge set a new world marathon record on the Formula 1 track at Monza. This served as the inspiration for the designer with various aspects of the shoe reflecting this breakthrough. Some of the key details include sketches on the sicklier, a digital cock graphic on the heel and a speed track icon on the inside of the tongue.

Intended to a fast and durable training shoe it includes an embedded full-length carbon-infused nylon plate, a 10mm offset, and a 3mm stack height. But most important these just look amazing in pics, the Zoom Fly SP is set to launch on June 8 at select NikeLab dealers.

Nike Gyakusou FW16 Collection

It’s hard to believe that Nike Lab and Jun Takahashi of Undercover have been collaborating on their line of running apparel Gyakusou for over six years. Through the process, the collection has continually evolved drawing from both Nike technology and Jun Takahashi’s punk sensibilities. While I felt the last few seasons have been lackluster, Gyaksou returns in fine form this year. The line features an fantastic color palette for fall and even sees a return of the infamous UC Giz print. The above video gives insight into the design process and great cropped views of the gear in motion.

Included are new items including a water-resistant LunarEpic Flyknit trainer, Aeroloft down jackets with removable sleeves.  Launching November 10th online and at select NikeLab stockists online such as END and Dover St Market.

The collection is now available at Nike Lab.

Nike Lab Air Unlimited Tan

I’m a huge fan of tan suede sneakers so it was no surprise that I liked these Air Unlimiteds as soon as I saw them. The high-top basketball sneaker has been reconfigured as a clean tonal colorway. Minimal branding is present on this pair and the best part may be the cream colored midsole. These will go fast so get these over at Nike Lab for $180.

Why Nike is Losing Ground

For my entire life, Nike has been number one when it comes to sneakers. In the hearts and minds of sneaker enthusiasts, among streetwear circles and in terms of pure sales , there was no substitute for Nike. Recently Adidas has made in-roads on Nike’s dominance in the sportswear market. In the fiscal second quarter Adidas sales jumped 23% from a year ago. Beyond just the numbers there’s a real feeling that Nike is falling off in it’s product offerings while Adidas is gaining momentum with successive releases. Since the release of the first Yeezy 750 sneaker in February 2015, Adidas has gained massive popularity with it’s Adidas Originals line, in particular with Ultra Boosts and NMDs. It’s clear that Adidas has made plenty of great design and marketing designs in the past two years. However part of their growth has also come through Nike’s failure to adapt to current market demands. Being at the top for too long can naturally cause some level of complacency, I will break down some of what the areas where Nike is falling behind below.
