Best Sneakers of 2014

2014 was a huge year for sneakers with countless memorable releases having come and gone. The sneaker industry is witnessing massive change and one can see the growing popularity of sneakers in the fashion community running parallel to the continued innovation within the sports/performance sector.

One of the key themes with sneaker design this year has been the development of more lifestyle releases that result from collaborations with varied parties from the streetwear and fashion worlds. In particular Adidas has continued to apply pressure to Nike through it’s established relationships with the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens , Kanye West and Pharrell. The later part of the year saw Nike continue to develop its SP (Special Projects) division with more limited and quickstrike releases that combine higher quality materials along with outside design influence from the likes of Errolson Hugh and Jun Takahashi.

As part of this commitment to the fashion industry, we see prices of certain more ‘luxe’ releases such as the Tisci x Nike Air Force 1 nearly reaching the pricepoint of high fashion designer sneakers. I think this is a good development in the long run as the sneaker giants are able to develop more innovative designs compared to largely apparel designers needing to figure out their own production and technology. It’ll be interesting to see if these trends perpetuate in the near year but in the meantime here is my personal list of the best sneaker releaes of 2014.

Nike Lab ACG Collection

Nike Lab has brought in the design talents of Errolson Hugh (Founder of ACRONYM) to help re-launch Nike ACG (All Conditions Gear) with this collection of pieces that fit firmly into the techwear category. A big emphasis of the items was fit, and the idea of creating pieces that made movement effortless and fluid while still providing protection from the elements. You can expect much of the utilitarian details that might be found in something by ACRONYM but with the influence of Nike sports heritage.

For me the best item in the collection were the 2-in-1 men’s jacket (the one with the more subtle tonal branding) and the Responder Backpack. They don’t come cheap though with the retail price being set at $550 and  $300 respectively. The release includes the ACG 2-in-1 men’s jacket, ACG Tech Fleece men’s pants, ACG Tech Fleece Funnel men’s sweatshirt, ACG Pocket men’s T-shirt, ACG Flyknit Trainer Chukka SFB, ACG Lunarterra Arktos and the ACG Responder backpack. As techwear continues to play a bigger role in the men’s market, it’s great to see that Nike is jumping in with a forward- thinking collection that doesn’t pull any punches.

Nike ACG is available today at Nike Lab.

Second Layer FW14 Editorial w/ H.Lorenzo

Menswear label SECOND/LAYER brightens up it’s gothninja fundamentals with this striking LA based editorial. The shoot captures the freedom of west coast of living and is smartly styled using pieces from H.Lorenzo Fall/Winter brand line-up which includes the likes of Undercover, Haider Ackermann and COMME des GARCONS Homme Plus. I really liked the feel of this editorial and how it modernizes the trademark elements of skate culture, grung and punk-rock in a relatable setting.
